When Students Can Read… But Still Feel Stuck

Technical Accuracy vs. Musical Understanding
Reading notation is an essential skill.
Students must learn:

If students don’t understand how the music works — harmonically, structurally, expressively — they often feel like they’re translating instead of creating.

This doesn’t require a curriculum overhaul.
Try these small shifts in lesson:
• Let students identify chord patterns in their repertoire
• Ask them to shape dynamics intentionally instead of copying markings
• Offer a short improvisation using the piece’s key
• Explore a lead sheet version of a familiar tune
• Invite them to alter the ending or create a variation
Even five minutes of creative exploration can deepen understanding dramatically.
