Blackthorn in Blossom, Piano Ensemble
Blackthorn in Blossom is a Ukrainian Folk Song that tells the story of Love & Loss. All of us have been moved by the devastation and senseless violence recently inflicted upon the Ukrainian people (March 2022). In a quest to send support, I hope pianists, all over the world, will lift up Ukrainian music, as a prayer of hope.
Blackthorn in Blossom is a traditional Folk Song, typically played on the Bandura- which is a plucked string instrument combining the elements of zither, lute and harp. In the Intermediate Solo, you can hear the influence of this instrument in the rotating, broken eighth notes that appear starting in m. 16 -19.
Written in C minor, 3/4 time. 40 measures. Performance time 01:05. Great for Recitals.

In this Multi Leveled Piano Ensemble, you’ll find:
Pianist 1: Written in C position, with accidentals, but is asked to move positions for 2, 4 measures sections in Right hand. RH has the melody and Left hand accompaniment stays in Bass C position with minimal notes.
Pianist 2: Written in C position, with accidentals, but is asked to move positions for 2 4 measures sections in Right hand. RH has the single note melody, with occasional, easy to play thirds. Left hand accompaniment stays in Bass C position with more activity than Elementary.
Pianist 3/Primo: Top half of the Duet. Melody comes in the Right Hand, with Left Hand minimal accompaniment.
Pianist 4/Secondo: Bottom half of the Duet. Interesting, moving Bass line to spice up the accompaniment.
Pianist 5/ Solo: This part gets all the fun! Is a stand alone Solo or the Leader of the group.
