Meet Brontosaurus, one of the largest dinosaurs ever to walk the Earth. Although enormous in size, this prehistoric giant was a peaceful plant-eater—and Brontosaurus: Gentle Giant captures that calm strength through warm harmonies, broad musical gestures, and a singing melody that unfolds with quiet confidence. Students experience the feeling of a giant moving steadily across the landscape while developing important listening and reading skills.

This Elementary–Late Elementary solo provides a gentle introduction to key signatures, harmonic intervals, and melodic storytelling. Students learn to recognize the three flats in the key signature (B♭, E♭, and A♭), discover how a single A♭ can create a special color within the music, and explore the difference between notes played one at a time (melodic intervals) and notes played together (harmonic intervals). The result is a rich musical experience that helps students connect theory concepts directly to the sound they create at the piano.

The included Explorer Training & Discovery pages encourage students to investigate key signatures, hunt for interval patterns, compare melodic and harmonic intervals, experiment with creating their own giant-sounding harmonies, and experience the unique feeling of music written in 4/4 but felt in “2.” Through guided activities and creative exploration, students discover how composers build warm, powerful sounds from simple musical building blocks.

Teacher Tips

• Before playing, ask students to locate the three flats in the key signature and name them aloud.
• Turn the A♭ into a “musical surprise hunt.” Discuss how that note changes the color of the music compared to nearby notes.
• Compare melodic intervals (notes played separately) and harmonic intervals (notes played together) and ask students which sounds strongest, warmest, or gentlest.
• Have students conduct or march while counting in “2” to physically experience the large, steady pulse of the piece.
• Encourage students to describe Brontosaurus using musical words such as broad, calm, strong, gentle, warm, or majestic.
• Invite students to create their own harmonic intervals and experiment with which combinations best match the personality of a gentle giant.
